In my media film trailer we used a variety of different locations and settings, so we could create a more detailed and open story line for any audience when they are watching the trailer. The use of certain settings and locations gave a more tense and dramatic atmosphere to the trailer, which is the type of atmosphere you'd expect for a thriller type film. We used different setting and locations for many different reason:
- The first location/setting that we used when filming was an empty field which we visited at different times, firstly in the middle of the day when it was light and then in the evening when it was dark. Using this empty field at helped create a more tense atmosphere, because it allowed the audience to feel the loneliness of certain characters in the trailer.
- Another location/setting that we used is the inside of a normal house and the neighbourhood, where we shot some scenes in different rooms around the house and outside of the house. Using a normal home allowed us to convey the fact that the main character who suffers with a split personality was once just a normal guy, but because of early traumatic moments in his life that occurred in the house, it then lead to his problems. The fact that we also involved the rest of the street or neighbourhood gave more tension to the scene because it made the audience feel as though there are other innocent people who have an equal chance of being put in danger. we got this idea again from the film Se7en as we felt that the use of the normal home gave more innocence to the film.
- We also used a garage, where the main characters other personality tortures one of his victims. Using the garage was really done because it gave more tension to the scene.
- The last location/setting that was used was a flat where we shot some scenes simply to create a more dramatic affect and we also used this setting to create more tension in the trailer because we the used the flat to show a character being stalked by the main evil character. Doing this worked well especially in the flat because we were able to get some very effective shot which helped create more tension during the stalking. This idea was inspired by the film Se7en, where there is a chance seen in a flat or apartment type building.
Can you link these ideas back to your research into existing trailers?
